Cystic Fibrosis

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States .  There are approximately 1,000 new cases of cystic fibrosis diagnosed each year, with more than 70% of patients diagnosed by age two.

Patients with CF have a defective gene that causes the body to produce unusually thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and can lead to severe lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas and stops natural enzymes from helping the body break down and absorb food.  Advances in medical research and treatments, including a range of inhaled medications, have enhanced and extended life for people with CF.

Special Considerations for Cystic Fibrosis Patients

Patients need additional monitoring and support to maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.  For example, each month, our pharmacy team may remind patients of the importance of notifying your doctor immediately if you develop ringing in the ears, dizziness, or changes in hearing. Also they may speak to you about cleaning of the administration devices and storage.
