Menopause
 |
Menopause, or the permanent end of
menstruation and fertility, is a natural biological process, not a medical illness.
Even so, the physical and emotional symptoms of menopause can disrupt your sleep,
sap your energy and trigger feelings of sadness and loss, while hormonal changes
cause a range of physical symptoms. Technically, you don't actually "hit" menopause
until one year following your final menstrual period. In the
United States, that occurs by age 51, on average.
|
The signs and symptoms of menopause
include:
-
irregular periods
-
decreased fertility
-
vaginal dryness
-
hot flashes
-
sleep disturbances
-
mood swing
-
increased abdominal fat
-
thinning hair
-
loss of breast fullness
Many physicians and their patients are choosing natural
hormone replacement therapy (nHRT) instead of conventional, synthetic therapies
to treat peri-menopausal or menopausal symptoms, PMS and sexual dysfunction. Natural
or bio-identical hormones that are derived from plants, including yams and soy,
are identical in structure to human hormones naturally found in a woman’s body.
Recent studies indicate that these natural, bio-identical hormones may have fewer
side effects versus synthetic preparations, while still affording protection against
heart disease and Alzheimer’s and improving bone density, as well as improving cholesterol
and lipid profiles.
