Primary Immune Deficiency

Primary immune deficiency diseases are disorders in which part of the body's immune system is missing or does not function properly.  The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes nearly 100 primary immune deficiency diseases. There are between 25,000 and 50,000 people in the U.S. who suffer from the most serious primary immunodeficiency (PI) diseases, but medical experts believe that many more have milder PI disease that has not yet been diagnosed.

Many individuals affected by primary immune deficiency diseases require life-long therapies including intravenous gamma globulin (IVIG) infusions.

Special Considerations for Primary Immune Deficiency Patients

Patients need additional monitoring and support to maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.  For example, each month, our pharmacy team may remind patients of the importance of discussing any over-the-counter medications with the pharmacist or physicians before taking, and monitoring for any signs of redness at the injection site, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat.
