Cancer
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled
growth and spread of abnormal cells.
Cancer can be caused by both external factors, such as tobacco, chemicals, radiation
and infectious organisms, as well as internal factors, such as inherited mutations
and immune conditions. If the spread
is not controlled, it can result in death.
Cancer is treated with surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, hormone therapy and biological
therapy.
The National Cancer Institute estimates that approximately
10.5 million Americans with a previous diagnosis of cancer were alive in 2003. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million
new cancer cases are expected to be diagnosed in 2007.
