Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease of the bone characterized by a decrease in bone mass, causing the bone to become fragile and easier to break or fracture.  Any bone can be affected, but osteoporosis is more commonly seen in the hip, spine, ribs and wrist.

Osteoporosis is estimated to affect up to 55 percent of people aged 50 and older, with approximately 10 million Americans already affected, and another 34 million at significant risk for developing the disease.  Osteoporosis typically affects women more than men; generally, 80 percent of those with osteoporosis are women, and it is responsible for more than 1.5 million fractures annually.

Special Considerations for Osteoporosis Patients

Patients need additional monitoring and support to maintain the safe and effective use of their medications.  For example, each month, our pharmacy team may remind patients of the importance of scheduling regular dental check ups and ask if you are experiencing any jaw pain, swelling, numbness, loose teeth, or gum infection. They may also ask if you are experiencing any unusual fatigue.
